Number Stomp

Domain:  Mathematics    Domain Element:  Numbers and Operations

 Indicator:  Develops increasing ability to count in sequence to 10 and beyond.

Group Size:  Large Group      Location:  Classroom, Outside Lawn, Gym

 Learning Objective:  One at a time, Students move from a 1-10 number sequence line, Stomp out the numbers  that correspond with the number worn and move over to create a new number sequence line from 1-10.  Children begin the number stomp on the right foot.

 Number of:  Capes:  10; Patches:  (11) 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10

 Additional Materials or props:  None

 Activity Preparations:  Prior to whole group circle, ask 10 children to get into capes.  Assign these children a number.  Ask them to remove the number patch and attach it to their capes.

Choreography:  Arrange the viewing audience in a semi-circle on the rug.   Prepare 2 spots at the center point in front of the semi-circle.  This is where the children will come to stomp when their number is called.  Children line up from 1-10 left of the semi -circle facing the viewing audience. (Give children the opportunity to figure out the sequence (line order) on their own as a group).  Instruct children to begin the stomp on the right foot.

 

Orchestration:  When the viewing audience is seated and children are in the correct number sequence in line, Begin.  Children in the audience call out the number 1. 1 comes to the spot and stomps 1 with the right foot on the spot and then moves over to the new line starting point right of the semi-circle.  When 1 has stopped, the viewing audience calls out the number 2. 2 moves over to the spot and stomps beginning with the right foot on the spot, left foot on the other spot.  2 moves to the right of the semi-circle next to 1.  When 2 has stopped, the audience calls 3.  The activity progresses through the number sequence until 10 has stomped and is in the line right of the semi-circle facing the audience.

 Variations on a Theme:  Use two spots of different colors.  Attach number patches on the children's backs.  With the Caper’s back facing the audience, have your audience chant  RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT as children stomp.

 With the  number on the children's back,  Children stand on the spot with their back facing the audience and squat the equivalent number worn on the cape.
